In-Depth Case Study -Madeleine McCann And Shannon Matthews.

Madeleine McCann And Shannon Matthews.

The Mccans described how they would plan to use the 300,000" this interprets that the McCann family is quite wealthy, Moreover , the daily telegraph uses words such as traumatised , disbelief, tearfully and "deepest darkest chasm"to portray the McCann as innocent and in absolute shock and horror of this tragic event. Also these words represent vulnerability, also the fact that they cuddle and gave a persona to the cuddle cat toy shows how much they are missing her. As a reader , The emotive language used made me feel sympathetic towards the family. She talks about how she cant bare to be parted from her two twins at night to make her look like a wonderful parent however readers might argue with that and say she should've been there the night she disappeared.

Shannon-the daily telegraph conveys shannon matthews mother as a stereotypical woman on benefits because she has 7 children to 5 different fathers. Further, 'Miss Mathews, The broadsheet Conveys the Matthews in a completely different light to the McCans as the parents were shown as irresponsible , Also the Matthews are of the lower class whereas the McCans occupations were much better. They asked for donations from the McCann police funds out of greed, they exploited the poor missing childs family.
Messages and values on social class. upper-middle class parents are represented as responsible and sophisticated. working class are seen as chaotic people that raise dysfunctional families.

In the Madeleine McCann artical ,The picture used looks extremely family oriented and comfortable. They look like they're apart nurturing family as its a shot of both of them off guard being happy and playing, meaning it wasnt for the cameras. The fact that they look busy/ occupied and nicely dressed could indicate they well of , this is true as they are working class people.

However Shannon Matthews article only includes singular shots of the mother and daughter indicating they are not as close, because if this wasnt the case they should have at least one family photo. The mother seems extremely agitated in the image used. based on the expression on her face could suggest she's a very angry person and like she'd rather not be confronted.
She was not dressed smartly, this could connote she may not be in a line of work where dress codes are important or she simply cant afford to be dressed a certain way.
It is visible in these news stories that the coverage can indeed be hierarchical.

Firstly this is evident as Shannons mother is perceived as the villain and an unfit mother whereas The McCann parents are viewed as well functioning, wealthy, working people with social power and a good relationship with their children.

The telegraphs connotations of the Matthews was the complete opposite of that. There was mentioning of how she was middle-working class with benefits, they are portrayed as people who struggle with their life and resort to doing any types of things in order to gain money (faking the kidnapping of their daughter and using the funds for personal needs).

She is portrayed so negatively that in my opinion as a reader I am opposed and do not sympathise for her family due to the fact that everyone has had money related issues but you do not drag your children into it and you should definitely not illegally claim money, you work for it no matter the situation. Further, I do not feel sorry for the MacCanns as its not normal to leave your children alone full stop, or even as young as they were, is it irresponsible and if they are incapable of supervising and looking after, they shouldn’t have those children.

  1. You draw on some examples and try to analyse representations, although your answers are too brief. You apply media language correctly although you have not understood the audience theory (reception theory) in the final question. D+ Vanessa
